STV Tuna

Sail Training Vessel (STV) TUNA is the East Coast Navy's sail training vessel. She is used for a wide variety of sail training, team building, community outreach and adventure training in support of the 10,500 members of the Defence Team in Halifax and 3,600 Cadets provincially.

STV TUNA is a CS36 and will be manned by a mixture of experienced and inexperienced crew for RHSP. For RHSP the skipper will be Captain Eric Hill who is a Tornado turned keelboat racer. He is an experienced offshore sailor and a veteran skipper of RHSP. He says he “loves to lead military crews because the physical and mental challenges inherent in ocean racing are their strong suit. What they may individually lack in sailing experience, they make up for with the ability to relentlessly pursue the objective as a team and you can look to see TUNA shine when the going gets tough.” Like Joint Task Force Atlantic, the crew represents all elements of the Canadian Forces and a wide variety of experience levels from instructor to beginner. The crew include Lieutenant Colonel Max Shaw of 12 Wing Shearwater (Watch Leader, Navigator and Coordinator of the STV TUNA program), Petty Officer First Class Pierre DeVillers (Watch Leader), Corporal Dan Levert of 12 Wing Shearwater, Master Warrant Officer Dave Fairman of Land Forces Atlantic Area HQ, and Leading Seaman Marie-Andrée Moncrief of HMCS Ville de Quebec.

The Canadian Forces has a strong history of supporting the RHSP and STV TUNA is proud to participate in this exciting Canadian Naval Centennial year.
