Photo of Remedios after the finish of the Newport Bermuda Race in 2004.
Remedios is a 1985 Hinckley Sou'wester 59. Mary M. Shirley and Frans J. Kok have owned her since 2001. During that time she has participated in the Marblehead - Halifax Race 2003 (1st in class), the Newport - Bermuda Race 2004 (5th in class), the Halifax - St. Pierre Race 2006 (line honors, 2nd in class).
Members of the crew this year include:
- Ann and David Rennie, passionate British sailors and racers who have a Fastnet Race under their belt, numerous ocean races in Europe, races on the Chesapeake Bay as well as Marblehead - Halifax and Newport - Bermuda. They are the proud owners of "Forth Dram", an Oyster 48 on which they have cruised the Eastern Seaboard between the Chesapeake and New Brunswick. Ann and David both hold Yachtmaster licenses of the Royal Yachting Association and are members of the Royal Ocean Racing Club. Ann has retired from the World Bank where she was the head of Human Relations. They both teach skiing and reside in Park City, Utah. David is Remedios' First Officer and Ann is the Navigaton Officer.
- Liz Lichner has done Marblehead - Halifax, Newport - Bermuda and Halifax - St. Pierre as well as numerous races on the Chesapeake Bay. She is Remedios' Alimentation Officer. She keeps the crew well fed and happy. Stay out of the galley unless you are invited to do the dishes and then do the darn dishes!. Liz resides in Washington, DC and retired from the International Monetary Fund last year. Do not get her started on politics or international finance.
- David Hartman is the Medical Officer. He hails originally from South Africa and now resides in Toronto. David started sailing in Simonstown, South Africa in the nineteen seventies and continued when he moved to Toronto late in the last millenium. He has done single handed races on Lake Ontario, sailed from Toronto to Grenada (Caribbean) and back, from Athens, Greece to Antigua, Caribbean and from Newfoundland to Labrador and back. After the race he and his wife Kim will be helping the owners take Remedios up to Labrador. Brrr.
- Frans J. Kok is the captain and owner of Remedios. He has sailed since he was 13 years old when he bought his first dinghy in the Netherlands. He has been sailing ever since and captained the Marblehead - Halifax Race, the Newport - Bermuda Race and the Halifax - St. Pierre Race on Remedios. He has chartered in the BVI, Greneda and Tonga. He is a member of the Royal Ocean Racing Club and holds a Master Mariner License. Remedios is the sixth boat he has owned. He knows about the two happiest days in a sailor's life.
The entire crew is looking forward to a fun race and the safe arrival of all participants in St. Pierre.
